Sandefjord Viking Park

At Sandefjord Viking Park, you can discover how Viking ships were built more than a thousand years ago. Located by the harbour in Sandefjord, the park is part of the Saga Gokstad project, which is building an archaeological reconstruction of the famous Gokstad ship. Using axes, traditional techniques and skilled craftsmanship, the ship is gradually taking shape.

Discover the art of Viking shipbuilding
At the building site near the Whaling Monument, large oak logs are split and shaped into planks, frames and other parts of the Viking ship. The craftspeople use replicas of Viking Age tools and traditional working methods. It is an opportunity to discover the knowledge and precision behind some of the most remarkable vessels of the Viking Age. The ship is being built as part of the Saga Gokstad project, organised by the Oseberg Viking Heritage Foundation. Work takes place in both Sandefjord and at Vikingodden in Tønsberg, where ship components are further prepared and assembled.

Would you like to help build a Viking ship?
You don't need previous boatbuilding experience to take part. The project welcomes volunteers and provides training in the safe use of tools, traditional woodworking methods and materials. Whether you would like to participate regularly or occasionally, there are different ways to contribute.

For information about working sessions, practical preparations and volunteering, visit the official Saga Gokstad website (in Norwegian).

The story of the Gokstad ship
The original Gokstad ship was excavated in 1880 from a large burial mound near Sandefjord. The discovery provided archaeologists with valuable insights into Viking shipbuilding and seafaring. To see where the original ship was discovered, visit the Gokstad Mound, an important Viking Age burial site with information about the archaeological discovery. You can also follow the Viking Trail through Vestfold, connecting several of the region's most significant Viking heritage sites.

A maritime experience by the harbour
Sandefjord Viking Park is located along Strandpromenaden, close to the Whaling Monument and Badeparken. The setting brings together two important parts of Sandefjord's maritime history: Viking shipbuilding and the town's later seafaring traditions.
