The Kjærra Waterfalls Park

Kjærra Waterfalls Park lies beside Kjærrafossen on the River Numedalslågen, near Steinsholt in Larvik Municipality. Walk along the river, discover traditional salmon-fishing structures and cross the distinctive wooden Kjærra Bridge. During summer, you may also be able to watch the opening of a historic salmon trap, a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. The park is a place to enjoy throughout the year. Bring a picnic, find a bench near the river and watch the water rush through the narrow falls.

Discover the waterfalls and historic salmon fishing
Kjærrafossen is particularly known for its traditional salmon fishing. For centuries, local fishermen have used the river's currents to catch salmon as they travel upstream. Written records mention fishing rights at Kjærra as early as 1388. The fishing structures are built from timber and stone, with specially designed traps that guide salmon into a catch chamber. The historic fishing installation was eventually taken out of use, but was restored and reopened in 1992. Demonstrations now help visitors understand how the traditional method works.

Watch the salmon trap being opened
One of the summer highlights is the opening of the historic salmon trap. Visitors gather to watch the trap being raised and learn about a fishing tradition passed down through generations. Demonstrations normally take place on Thursdays during the summer season, often at 6 pm, with the first opening usually in early July. The activity depends on river conditions and water levels. Check the current programme before travelling, as demonstrations cannot always go ahead.

Cross Kjærra Bridge
Kjærra Bridge is a wooden pedestrian bridge spanning 132 metres across the River Numedalslågen. Its main unsupported span measures 91 metres, and the bridge opened in 2001. From the bridge, enjoy views across the water, waterfalls and wooded landscape on both banks. It connects the walking areas and gives you another perspective on the river.

Walk among sculptures and green spaces
Kjærra Waterfalls Park has paths, open spaces and benches where you can stop for a break. There are also designated picnic and barbecue areas. As you explore, look for sculptures by Norwegian artist Trond Fredriksen and outdoor photographs showing the same landscape during winter. At Myrejordet, a geological timeline created with Gea Norvegica UNESCO Global Geopark tells the story of Earth's development and the natural processes that shaped Lågendalen.

Music and events beside the falls
The outdoor amphitheatre at Kjærra is used for concerts and cultural events. The park also hosts occasional exhibitions, guided visits and traditional celebrations. Check the current programme if you would like to combine your visit with an event.

Combine your visit with Høyt & Lavt
Høyt & Lavt Adventure Park is located next to Kjærra, with treetop climbing courses and zip lines. You can combine a day of climbing with a quieter walk beside the river. The adventure park has separate opening hours, booking conditions and requirements for participants.

Stay safe near the river
The River Numedalslågen has strong currents, and water levels can change considerably. Keep your distance from the falls, use established paths and take care on wet rocks and slippery surfaces. Use barbecues only where permitted and follow local fire regulations. The historic fishing structures are an important part of the area's cultural heritage. Please enjoy them from the designated visitor areas and avoid disturbing the installations.
