Historical flights with Dakota Norway

A pearl of a veteran plane that has Sandefjord as its base. Norway's only flying DC3 DAKOTA is situated at the east side of Torp Sandefjord Airport. The shining "silverbird" has been taken well care of and has been in the air since 1943 – and has a past as "presidential-plane". Regular tours of Vestfold in the summer season from May to October. See the website for details.

It used to be the finish President Kekkonen's private plane when he was in office. "Dakota Norway" now owns the plane and thanks to great enthusiasm among its members, technicians and mechanics, the plane is still in the air in the best condition ever. The plane fullfills the strict demands of the Norwegian Aviation Department at all times.

Jutøya Ferry to Veierland
The Jutøya ferry connects the island of Veierland with Tenvik on Nøtterøy and Engø near Sandefjord. The crossing takes approximately 10–15 minutes, and bicycles are welcome on board. Cars must be parked at the ferry terminals in Tenvik or Engø, where paid parking is available.

Veierland
Veierland is a car-free island, just a short ferry ride from Tenvik or Engø. Home to around 150 permanent residents and many holiday homes, the island offers gravel roads winding through rolling countryside, open fields, woodlands, meadows, and beautiful views of the sea and archipelago. It is ideal for exploring on foot or by bicycle.

The island features a church, kiosk, cafés, water taxi, beaches, guest harbour, accommodation, football pitch, and numerous walking trails.

Swimming
Veierland offers several great swimming spots. Kjørholmen, on the island's northwest side, is a large recreational area with smooth coastal rocks and good camping opportunities. Hvervodden, on the southern side of the island, is considered Veierland's best beach, with a sandy shoreline.

Accommodation
The island's former school has been converted into accommodation and can be booked through the Oslofjord Outdoor Recreation Council (Oslofjordens Friluftsråd). Camping is also permitted at Kjørholmen.

The Whaling Monument

The Whaling Monument stands beside the harbour in Sandefjord, where Jernbanealleen meets Strandpromenaden. Created by Norwegian sculptor Knut Steen, the large bronze sculpture depicts whalers in an open boat, rowing with their harpoon raised. Unveiled in 1960, the monument commemorates an industry that played a major role in Sandefjord's development. One of its most unusual features is that the sculpture slowly rotates on its own axis, surrounded by fountains.

A sculpture that moves
The Whaling Monument is designed as a compass rose, with a central bronze sculpture showing whalers at work. The figures stand in a small boat, with the harpooner raising his weapon above his head.
The sculpture completes one rotation every hour. Around the monument, granite reliefs depict work aboard whaling vessels and floating whale factory ships. Wrought-iron details feature birds, seals and penguins.
Take a walk around the monument to discover its different details, or sit on one of the nearby benches and watch as the sculpture slowly changes direction.

The story behind the monument
Norwegian sculptor Knut Steen won the competition to design the monument in 1953. The artwork was developed in collaboration with Alf Bjorhusdal, while blacksmith Olaf Treidene created the wrought-iron details based on Steen's drawings. The monument was funded by consul Lars Christensen and several companies connected to Sandefjord's whaling industry. It was officially presented to Sandefjord Municipality on 23 June 1960 as a memorial to the people who worked in modern whaling. To see more of Knut Steen's work, visit Midtåsen Sculpture Park, where a collection of his marble and bronze sculptures is displayed.

When Sandefjord was a whaling town
Whaling shaped Sandefjord throughout much of the 20th century. Many local sailors worked aboard whaling vessels and floating factory ships in the Southern Ocean, while shipping companies, shipyards and other businesses on land depended on the industry. In 1954, approximately 2,800 men from the Sandefjord district were employed in whaling. The industry created jobs and economic growth, but also contributed to large-scale exploitation of whale populations. To explore this history further, visit the Whaling Museum, where exhibitions tell the story of whales, the whaling industry and the people involved.

Combine your visit with Badeparken and the harbour
The Whaling Monument stands beside Badeparken, a green public park with walking paths, lawns and several sculptures. Continue through the park or take a stroll along Sandefjord's waterfront. The town is also home to numerous other works of public art. Explore more through the sculptures in Sandefjord for ideas on an art-filled walk through the town.

Plan your visit
The Whaling Monument is located at Strandpromenaden, at the end of Jernbanealleen in central Sandefjord, beside the harbour and Badeparken.
The monument stands outdoors in a public area and can be viewed throughout the year. Admission is free, and no ticket or advance booking is required. You can see the monument in just a few minutes, but allow a little extra time to observe its rotation, reliefs and sculptural details.

The Gokstad mound

The famous Gokstad Viking longship was excavated in 1880 and gave a reliable picture of what a Viking longship would have looked liked.

When Nicolaysen dug out the mound, he quickly saw that there had been grave robbers there. Weapons were placed in all men's graves from this time. It is as certain as jewelry being placed in women's graves. There were no weapons in the grave.

The skeleton found was of a man who was believed to be between 50 and 70 years old when he was buried. It was also believed that the man had been suffering from arthritis. He was around 1.85 meters tall. In the Viking Age, this was far above the average height of a man.

Next to the skeleton were some remains of fabric, which may be remnants of the dead man's suit. The pieces of wood are believed to be the remains of a bed. He had brought three fishing hooks. A board game with a piece made of horn is reminiscent of the game we today call mill. There were also many pieces of harnesses for horses. One of the pieces depicts a rider with a horse – and has become known as the rider medallion.

In addition to the skeleton, the remains of the feathers of a peacock were found. This find is the first of its kind from the Nordic region. Was the man supposed to bring the bird for food, or was it to show his power that this particular bird was placed in the pile? For eating utensils, the man had also brought six cups and a plate, all of which were made of hardwood. Three small boats and several beds were found in front of the mast. Otherwise, there was also hiking equipment such as a sled, a vessel for drinking water (750 litres), bargeboard for a tent and kitchen equipment – a trough, some cutting boards and a large bronze kettle.

12 horses and six dogs were also found outside the ship.

The Gokstad mound was reopened in 2007 and new investigations were carried out on the grave. The grave was previously believed to be that of Olav Geirstad-Alv, half-brother of Halvdan Svarte. However, recent discoveries have increased the uncertainty surrounding this version of history. It is therefore still uncertain who was buried in the Gokstad mound. The area has been equipped with informative notice boards and can be found on the RV 303, about 2 kilometres from the centre towards Tønsberg.
