Stokke Church

When Stokke Church was to be built, they used architect Jacob Wilhelm Nordan's drawings of Asker Kirke, with some changes. At the end of the 1960s, the church was restored, and changes were made both inside and out.

Today there are around 500 seats inside the church.

In 2011, the church celebrated its 125th anniversary. Today, the church is used as a concert arena, among other things.

Chapel at the harbour

In this atmospheric chapel everyone is welcome for a quiet moment and candle lighting. There's also a memorial room with a commemorative plaque for the Norwegian whalers who were buried in South Georgia.

Although Bryggekapellet is primarily supposed to be a room of silence, they hold three weekly evening events in the summer. The chapel is also rented out to other suitable events, and there have been many weddings held here over the years.

The chapel is open every day during the summer period. For the rest of the year, a memorial meeting is held once a month.

There is room for 30 people in the chapel.

Sandar Church

The church as it stands today is made of wood, and was erected in 1792 in the Louis XV style. From the beginning, the church had a hemispherical dome instead of a spire, but this was changed in 1868 to the spire we know today.

The altarpiece from 1807 symbolizes the women at the cross, and was painted by Frederik Petersen.

Since 1929, the church has undergone a number of improvements, such as the installation of floodlights, electric heating and a baptismal sacristy.

Sandar church is protected, and only open in connection with church actions and other announced events. It is surrounded by a cemetery.

The church has 800 seats.

Sandefjord Church

The original church where Sandefjord church stands today was a small, white wooden church from 1872. It was destroyed in the town fire in 1900, along with large parts of the city center in general. After the fire, today's Sandefjord church was built in brick, and was completed in 1903.

The interior of the church has subsequently been significantly renewed. The altarpiece was made in 1963 by Dagfinn Werenskiold, and consists of 17 fields roughly carved in mahogany. It is of considerable size and contains scenes from the life of Jesus.

Sandefjord Church is known for its good acoustics, and a number of concerts are organized both during the day and in the evening.

The carillon in Sandefjord Church is computer-controlled, and is of international standard. It plays every hour during the day.

The church is only open in connection with church activities and announced events, as well as Wednesdays in the summer.

The church has 600 seats.

The Whale catcher Southern Actor

Moored at Museumsbrygga in Sandefjord, Southern Actor is the world's only remaining fully operational whale catcher from the industrial whaling era. Built in England in 1950, the vessel took part in Antarctic whaling until 1962. During the summer season, visitors can step aboard and discover an important part of Sandefjord's maritime history.

Step aboard a piece of whaling history
Southern Actor has been carefully restored to preserve as much of its original character as possible. On board, you'll find an authentic post-war whale catcher, complete with its original steam engine and equipment that offers insights into working life at sea. The vessel was built for Sevilla Whaling Co. Ltd., associated with the Scottish shipping company Chr. Salvesen & Co. Its funnel still displays the company's distinctive colours.

For more about the people, expeditions and impact of whaling on Sandefjord, visit the Whaling Museum, just a few hundred metres away.

From Antarctic waters to Sandefjord
After many years as a working whale catcher, Southern Actor ended up at a shipbreaking yard in northern Spain. In 1989, the vessel was saved from being scrapped and brought to Sandefjord, where it underwent extensive restoration with significant contributions from former whalers. Its original steam engine is still operational, and Southern Actor remains capable of sailing. As a working heritage vessel, it offers a rare opportunity to discover the technology of industrial whaling. In 1999, Southern Actor received the Olavsrosa heritage quality award from Norsk Kulturarv.

Visit the whale catcher in summer
Southern Actor is moored at Museumsbrygga, Brygga 1, in central Sandefjord.
The regular visitor season runs from 15 June to 31 August, with opening hours from 11 am to 4 pm when the vessel is in port and available to visitors. Check current opening hours and admission arrangements before visiting, as the vessel may also be away on other assignments.

See current visitor information from the Whaling Museum.

Charter trips aboard Southern Actor
Would you like to experience this historic whale catcher at sea? From May to September, Southern Actor is available for private group charters along the Vestfold coast. A charter trip offers the opportunity to experience the original steam engine in operation and enjoy the coastline from the deck of a historic working vessel. Food and drinks can also be arranged in advance.

During part of the summer season, charters are available only after 5 pm. Find out more about charter trips aboard Southern Actor and how to arrange a trip.
