Arnadal Church is located at Fossnes in Sandefjord municipality. Built in 1882, this traditional wooden church was designed by architect Johannes Henrik Nissen and has served the local community for more than 140 years. Inside, visitors can discover an altarpiece painted by Otto Valstad and decorative textiles based on designs by artist Hans Gerhard Sørensen.
A wooden church dating from 1882
Construction of Arnadal Church began in the summer of 1880 on land belonging to the Fossnes farm. The new church was built close to its predecessor, which remained standing until the new building was ready for use. The church was consecrated on 26 April 1882 by Bishop Essendrop. Its architecture follows the traditional Norwegian long-church layout, with timber walls, a tower at the western end and a rectangular chancel. During the 1950s, the church underwent extensive restoration work and was rededicated in the autumn of 1956.
Historic artwork and textiles
The church interior contains several interesting examples of art and craftsmanship. The altarpiece depicts Jesus walking with two disciples. It was painted by Norwegian artist Otto Valstad as a copy of a work by Danish painter Anton Dorph. Decorative knotted textiles based on designs by artist Hans Gerhard Sørensen hang along the interior walls. The church also has an organ built by Hammarberg in Gothenburg in 1980, replacing an earlier instrument that had been damaged.
Why was it once called Arendal Church?
Arnadal Church was originally known as Arendal Church. The name was changed in 1952 to avoid confusion with the town of Arendal in southern Norway. The change took place during the period of extensive restoration work.
