Discover Larvik from a different perspective on Bystien, a circular walking trail through the town's green spaces, viewpoints and historic neighbourhoods. The route combines woodland paths, steps, steep slopes and streets in the town centre.
Eight hilltops with views of Larvik
Bystien crosses eight of the town's hilltops, offering several opportunities to enjoy the views. Highlights include Herregårdsfjellet, Mesterfjellet and Doktorfjellet, where you can see different parts of Larvik from above. Along the way, the scenery changes between quiet woodland and the urban landscape. Some sections pass through narrow rocky passages, while others follow streets and pedestrian routes. This variety makes the walk an enjoyable way to explore the town beyond its main streets.
Local history along the way
Bystien passes close to several of Larvik's best-known places and historic areas, including Herregården, Bøkelia, Hammerdalen and Thor Heyerdahl's childhood home. In Hammerdalen, you can discover traces of Larvik's industrial heritage, while the area around Herregården offers a glimpse into the town's earlier history. Information boards along the route provide further details about the places you pass.
Explore at your own pace
You do not have to complete the entire trail to enjoy Bystien. As it is a circular route through central Larvik, you can begin at different points and choose a shorter section. Bøkeskogen, Larvik's well-known beech forest, is a natural place to start if you would like to combine the town walk with time among the trees. You can also discover more activities and places to visit in Larvik and Stavern.
