Tvistein Lighthouse

Tvistein Lighthouse stands on the eastern of two small islets about three kilometers south of Hummerbakkfjorden. The lighthouse is a coastal lighthouse and has beds for up to 17 people. The season is from May to September.

There are great fishing and diving opportunities around Tvistein. Tvistein Lighthouse is also a great destination for day visitors. From the wharf, there are great swimming opportunities, and it is well organized to get ashore easily. Due to the good distribution between the islands, there is often great clear water out here.

The accommodation
The lighthouse has 17 beds in 7 rooms. There is 1 bedroom in the main house, 1 in the "Fyrgården" and 5 in the outhouse. The room in the main house has 5 beds, and the room in "Fyrgården" has room for 2. The 5 rooms in the outhouse have 2-3 beds in each, distributed between double beds and bunk beds.

There may be other visitors to the lighthouse at the same time. As an overnight guest, you share the kitchen, bathroom and toilet with the other overnight guests. The bathroom is in the main house, while the shared kitchen is in the "Fyrgården", also called "Sjefsboden" (meaning the chief booth). There are several outdoor areas to use, but also a common living room in the Machine House, if you want to sit inside.

Overnight guests must bring their own bedding (duvets and pillows are provided), as well as their own food, drink and water. Water from the cisterns can be used for brushing teeth, washing hands and for cooking, but it is not drinking water. The kitchen is fully equipped, and there is a barbecue for free use.

Booking
Booking via e-mail to booking@tvistein.info. It is also possible to buy gift vouchers if you want to give away an overnight stay experience!

Transportation
Transport to and from the lighthouse is from Laberget marina in Nevlunghavn.
There is free parking for cars right by the boat harbor in Nevlunghavn.

It is also possible to arrive on the island by your own boat, or by taxi boat if you want to come for a day visit. There are also boats that can be hired by groups on request. The harbor at Tvistein is well sheltered from the southwest, but not from the north. There can be a lot of sea in the harbor, so be aware if you come in your own boat.

Accomodation at Bolærne

All together the three islands, Western Bolæren, Middle Bolæren and Eastern Bolæren cover over 2 square kilometers. In addition to this there are over 40 smaller islands, islets and skerries around the main islands. Due to the rich and varied flora and fauna that exists in the area much of the archipelago is part of the Færder national park.

Transport
The only way to reach Bolærne is by boat. People will prefer to travel out in their own boat if they have one, but there is also a ferry which leaves daily from the town of Tønsberg in the summer. For more information on the ferry go to the official website http://www.bolernebaaten.com/

There is also possible to go by taxiboat; Fjordtaxi.

Middle Bolæren
Considered by many the most beautiful island, Middle Bolæren is prized for its rich flora and scenic landscapes. There is a nice costal trail which connects the different sights on the island. Among other things there are various remnants from a POW camp built to house Russians during WWII,
several burial mounds from the viking age and a grand decidous forest. The Earls lodge is also a popular attraction. The most common way to access the island is from Kongshavnsundet.

Western Bolæren
Not as visited as the two other islands in summer, Western Bolæren nonetheless boasts many nice sights and swimming spots. Accessed mostly by the main quay at Jenserud, it is ideal for a quiet day out enjoying nature. There is a café, several cabins that can be rented and a big area where one can pitch tents for free. It has a coastal path, burial mounds, a viking camp and several fine beaches.

Eastern Bolæren
The most popular island of the three, Eastern Bolæren shows the strongest signs of human influence. Most of the buildings are situated around the guest port on the west side. These include a small hotel for overnight stay, a resturant and a kiosk. Bolærne fort organises guided trips of the islands defensive fortifications, but one may also walk among the bunkers and trenches at leisure. Like the two others, Eastern Bolæren has several bathing spots and paths crisscrossing the forests and rocks. There is also a designated area for pitching tents.

Engøy Gjestegård

Engøy Gjestegård has double rooms and single rooms for rent in the restored brewery house from the beginning of the 18th century. The inside has been refurbished and you get to experience the history of the building.

Kristin Havsjømoen and Tom Aarøe are the owners and hosts of Engøy Gjestegård.

History
There have been people living in the area since the Viking Age. The farm has a history as far back as the 17th century and was the ideal farm close to the ocean. Those who lived here in acient times had their work on the farm, they went on fishingtrips and several worked as skippers on sailboats.

On Mølleråsen, a short walk from the farm you will find the farm's mill, wich was set up in the early 1800s, and was probably one of thef first in Sandefjord. From Mølleråsen there are great views to the south and the large foundation stones are still there with their history. On a path below the mill there are also foundation bricks for the mill boy's house.

Transport

Fjordtaxi will drive you out for a fixed fee.

By boat: The island which the lighthouse is built upon is quite samm and as a result it is very exposed to the elements. there is also a lack of good spots to anchor, though there are several spots where kayakks can easily dock. If one wishes to use ones own motor boat to visit then the hosts at the lighthouse must be contacted first. Any use of a private boat is done at the owners risk. Alternatively one can dock at the guest port at Eastern Bolæren for a fee and travel out to Fulehuk from there.

Safety
Young children must be looked after at all times as there are several cliffs and many slippery rocks to fall on. If you bring children it is
recommended that they wear life vest while outside. Remember that it is the law to bring life vests if one arrives in a private boat. The lighthouse
