Castle Rock Tower

The present tower was built as a 1000-year anniversary and was completed in 1888. The tower is 17 meters high, with a stunning view of the town. The original cross from the Maria Church and the engraved signatures of three Norwegian kings can be seen in the tower – 1906 – King Hakon VII during the coronation process, 1958 – King Olav V during the signing process and 1992 – King Harald V during the opening of Tønsberg and Nøtterøy Library

Slottsfjellet – The Castle Hill area is the most popular outdoor recreation area in the center of Tønsberg, and has a long and exciting history. The Castle Hill has the largest ruin park in Scandinavia with ruins from Castrum Tunsbergis, which was Norways largest castle in the 14th century. The castle was destroyed in 1503.

The ruins once consisted of 700 metres of outer-wall with watchtowers and castles, the King´s Hall, built by King Håkon Håkonsson, “Teglkastellet” built by King Magnus Lagabøte, and St. Mikael Church which may have been completed in 1191. The original main tower was probably even bigger and more beautiful than today's tower.

The powerful crag was the ultimate spot for a castle complex in the insecure times when old Tunsberg – Norway's most important naval port in the east – started growing, and the power struggles between Norway's many kings ravaged the country. Much exciting Norwegian history was written on Slottsfjellet, or Mikkelsberg, as it was once called. Famous Norwegian medieval kings and princesses have married here, and power struggles between the Baglers and the Birkebeiners have played out.

The tower is closed from October – April, but the ruins can be visited year-round.

Tvistein Lighthouse

Tvistein
Tvistein Lighthouse was established in 1908, and the light was first lit the same autumn in a low tower on the roof of the keeper’s residence. Storage buildings and a boathouse for the lighthouse staff were also built, and the first lighthouse keeper was Johan B. Nielsen (1908–1913).

Tvistein Lighthouse is a unique cultural heritage site located on the outer edge of the archipelago off Nevlunghavn. After more than 10 years of restoration work and over 10,000 hours of volunteer effort, the lighthouse reopened for accommodation and visitors – a result of strong local commitment and dedication to preserving coastal history.

At Tvistein, visitors can experience coastal nature, history and traditional maritime culture up close. The lighthouse offers accommodation in historic surroundings close to the sea. Transport to and from the lighthouse is by boat from Laberget marina in Nevlunghavn.

Day Visits Summer 2026
During summer 2026, day trips to Tvistein Lighthouse will be arranged from Laberget marina in Nevlunghavn. The trips run every Wednesday from weeks 26–32, approximately 1:30 PM–4:00 PM. Guided tours are available for those who wish to join. Price is NOK 500 per person and is paid upon departure.

Accommodation
The main season runs from 19 June to 16 August, when Tvisteins Venner serves as host at the lighthouse. Outside the hosted weeks, overnight stays are available on weekends from 14 May to 25 October 2026. The lighthouse can also be rented for private gatherings outside the rental season, and the boathouse has capacity for 30–35 people. Booking opens on 1 February.

The lighthouse has 17 beds distributed across 7 rooms.
There may be other visitors staying at the lighthouse at the same time. Overnight guests share the kitchen, bathroom and toilets with other guests. The bathroom is located in the main house, while the shared kitchen is in “Fyrgården”, also known as Sjefsboden. There are several outdoor areas on the island, as well as a shared indoor lounge in the engine house.

Guests must bring their own bed linen, food, drinks and water. Duvets and pillows are provided at the lighthouse. Water from the cistern is used for brushing teeth, hand washing and boiling, but it is not drinking water. The kitchen is fully equipped, and a grill is available for guests to use.

The accommodation price during the season is NOK 300 per person per night. Outside the season, the price is NOK 8,000 per weekend. Transport from Laberget marina in Nevlunghavn costs NOK 400 per person return.

See available accommodation in the calendar on the Tvistein website, or send an email to booking@tvistein.info to book your stay.
