At Larvik's inner harbour, right in the town centre, you can relax in a sauna overlooking Larviksfjord. When you're ready to cool off, the sea is just a few steps away, with a swimming ladder right outside.
A preheated sauna by the fjord
The sauna is normally heated to around 80°C and is ready when you arrive. Here, you can alternate between the warmth of the sauna and refreshing sea swims throughout the year. Facilities include a spacious changing room, toilet and indoor shower.
Private or shared sauna
Book the entire sauna for your group or reserve a place in a shared session. The shared sauna accommodates ten people, while private bookings allow for larger groups. Larvik Sauna offers sessions lasting 60 or 120 minutes.

The coastal trail in Stavern forms part of a 35-kilometre marked walking route through Brunlanes in Larvik. The full trail stretches from Stavern via Nevlunghavn, Mølen and Helgeroa to Tvedalen. Along the way, you will pass through woodland, across rocky coastal landscapes and beside sandy beaches overlooking the Skagerrak. Choose a short outing from Stavern or walk a longer section of the coast.
From Fredriksvern to Minnehallen
A convenient place to begin is Fredriksvern, the historic naval dockyard in Stavern. The area has preserved military buildings, coastal views and paths through its historic surroundings.
Continue towards Minnehallen, the pyramid-shaped national memorial commemorating Norwegian seafarers who lost their lives during wartime. The hill offers views across the sea and nearby islands. The memorial itself has seasonal opening hours, but the surrounding area can also be visited outside summer.
Towards Rakke and Naverfjorden
Beyond Minnehallen, the coastal trail continues west towards Rakke, where open rocky shores and low coastal vegetation overlook the sea. Much of the section between Stavern and Rakke has improved accessibility. However, wheelchair users and visitors with pushchairs should consult the municipality's map to identify the specifically accessible stretches.
At Rakke, a small coastal museum provides information about local nature and history during the summer season. Further west, the trail passes the Naverfjorden area, where sandy beaches and campsites offer opportunities to stop by the water.
Along the coastline to Nevlunghavn
The route continues through a varied coastal landscape of woodland, grassy shores, sandy beaches and smooth rocks. Nevlunghavn is a pleasant place to stop. This small fishing village is known for its white wooden houses, harbour and boats. During summer, you can find places to eat and drink around the harbour. It is also a natural place to finish a shorter section of the walk.
From Nevlunghavn to Mølen
From Nevlunghavn, the coastal trail continues approximately 2.5 kilometres to Mølen.
Here, the landscape opens towards the sea, with extensive pebble shores, ancient burial mounds and geological traces of the last Ice Age. Mølen is a protected heritage and natural area within Gea Norvegica UNESCO Global Geopark. Leave stones and archaeological remains undisturbed and respect the local birdlife. The coastal trail continues towards Helgeroa and Tvedalen for walkers wishing to explore further.
Choose the right section
The coastal trail is a walking route with several possible starting points. Surfaces vary from established walking paths to woodland trails, grassy shorelines and exposed rocks. Some sections are relatively easy, while others are uneven. The trail is marked in blue on posts, trees and rocks, with information boards at several parking areas. The entire route is not suitable for cycling or pushchairs.
The Brunlanes coastal trail connects Stavern, Nevlunghavn, Mølen, Helgeroa and Tvedalen. Walk the full route or choose a shorter section with a separate starting point.

The full coastal trail is approximately 35 km. Surfaces include established paths, woodland trails, grassy shorelines and coastal rocks. Walking times and difficulty depend on the section you choose.
Trailheads and parking
Central Stavern is a convenient starting point for the walk towards Minnehallen and Rakke. Other trailheads are available near Nevlunghavn, Mølen and elsewhere along the coast. Parking areas and access routes are marked on the municipality's coastal trail map. Check local parking restrictions.
Waymarking and accessibility
The trail has blue waymarks and directional signs. Much of the Stavern–Rakke section has improved accessibility, but the entire route is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. The municipality's map identifies accessible sections.
Good to know
The full trail is a long point-to-point walk. Arrange return transport and check current bus services with VKT. Walking conditions depend on weather and ground conditions, and wet coastal rocks may be slippery. Mølen is protected. Follow local signs, take your litter home and respect the natural and historic surroundings.

Hike Description of the Coastal Path in Stavern
From Stavern town centre you can head straight to the start of the coastal path, perfectly situated at the end of the a historical walk through Fredriksvern verft. Enjoy the beautiful views of the archipelago, as well as the rest of the fortress area. Make sure you don’t miss the art innstallation The Peace Ships which consist of old wooden boats installed with light and sound by artist Päivi Laakso.
Follow the path past the beach and up to the Hall of Rememberence overlooking the sea. Minnehallen is a national memorial to Norwegian sailors and is structured like a pyramid. It is open during the summer season, but you can enjoy the view from outside all year.
The hike continues towards Rakke, and this part of the route is also accessible by wheelchair. On the way there, you should make sure to have a pit stop at the cute farm shop Søndre Grevle. Enjoy the fresh baked goods or other locally produced treats, before settling down for a break by the compass at Rakke. You can’t really beat that view of the archipelago – best enjoyed with a one of the baked goods you procured at earlier😁
Coastal Path Museum
Just inside the gate to the Rakke outdoor area, in a small red house next to the coastal path hut, you’ll find the Coastal Museum. Here you can learn about the local history of Brunlanes and Stavern, facts about the coastal path and the Geoparks in Larvik. This is an unmanned information centre that is open to visitors during the summer season.
Once you’ve passed the Naverfjord, the Normanbo area is the place for beautiful sunsets.
Nevlunghavn
Nevlunghavn is a charming fishing village with idyllic little white houses and a great view of Skagerak. There are many fishing boats along the harbour, and the sheltered location has also made the harbour popular for sailing boats. Often you’ll be able to buy fresh seafood and enjoy a drink at the pier.
During the summer season, you can buy fresh fish, crabs and prawns at the pier and have lunch or dinner at the charming Nevlunghavn Gjestgiveri.
There are plenty of great places to take a swim here all year round – but if you find it a little chilly you should combine it with an hour in the sauna. A great lifehack for people who want to check out the Norwegian sea and Oslofjord, but aren’t accustomed to Norwegian water temperatures 😌

Mølen is a popular hiking destination for many, both in fine weather and in storms. Mølen is part of the UNESCO European Geopark. There are several rocks to explore for those who are interested, such as the Larvikite that many people are familiar with.
Among the pebbles you can find over 100 different types of rocks. With its 230 burial cairns from the Early Iron Age to the Bronze Age, the cove is one of the most magnificent in Norway.
Mølen is also a fantastic place to birdwatch – there are plenty of migratory birds during spring and autumn you can watch while enjoying the breathtaking views of the horizon.
Parking Information
Parking areas are marked on the map Kyststien (pdf), providing a good overview of where the nearest car park is located.
From the car parks there is marked access and accessibility to the coastal path. It is easy to find parking in Stavern town centre. There is also a parking lot right by Mølen, just follow the roadsigns when you get there.
Line 208 serves both Nevlunghavn and Helgeroa and takes you to Larvik. From Helgeroa you can also use Line 04, which runs to Stavern and Larvik throughout the week.
