Outdoor climbing in Vestfold
Discover outdoor climbing along the Vestfold coast. From Helgeroa to Tønsberg, you'll find everything from bouldering on coastal rocks to sport climbing and traditional climbing on natural rock faces. Choose between easily accessible cliffs near town, wooded areas and climbing spots overlooking the sea.
Find a climbing area that suits you
Vestfold has a wide variety of climbing areas with different grades and climbing styles.
Try bouldering on shorter routes without ropes, using suitable crash pads for protection. Many areas also offer bolted sport climbing routes and traditional climbing, where climbers place their own protection in the rock. The coastline also has opportunities for deep-water soloing (DWS), where climbing takes place above the sea. This requires particular experience and careful assessment of water depth, landing areas and sea conditions.
Five climbing areas to explore
Oksås, Sandefjord: Sport and traditional climbing with a relatively short approach. The area is also described as family-friendly.
Mokollen, Sandefjord: Climbing close to town, with views across Sandefjord and the surrounding landscape.
Husvik, Tønsberg: A combination of bouldering, sport climbing and traditional climbing in an area also described as suitable for families.
Hvasser, Færder: Particularly known for coastal bouldering, alongside traditional climbing routes.
Ula, Larvik: An extensive selection of boulder problems and traditional climbing routes, including areas close to the sea. Difficulty levels, access and protection requirements vary. Consult an up-to-date climbing guide before choosing a route.
Climbing courses, local clubs and equipment
Sandefjord og Vear Klatreklubb (SaVe) helps develop and maintain outdoor climbing areas across Vestfold. The club provides information about activities and courses, and members can borrow equipment such as bouldering crash pads and helmets under its lending arrangements. If you've mainly climbed indoors, an outdoor climbing course can help you develop skills in equipment use, protection, route selection and safety on natural rock.
More climbing experiences in Vestfold
For a guided coastal climbing adventure, discover Via Ferrata Tjøme, combining climbing, abseiling and a zipline. For climbing indoors, visit Høyt Under Taket Tønsberg, offering climbing walls, bouldering and activities for different ability levels.
Plan your visit
Outdoor climbing areas are spread along the Vestfold coast, each with its own access routes. There is no single meeting point or set opening schedule. Access to the climbing areas is generally free, although equipment hire, courses and organised activities may involve a fee.
Before visiting, check access, parking, route descriptions, climbing grades and any local restrictions. Respect landowners, wildlife and vegetation, including any seasonal access restrictions.
Outdoor climbing requires suitable equipment and experience. Beginners should climb with a qualified instructor. Always assess the weather, rock conditions and safety before starting.
