Experience Svenner Lighthouse

The climate at Svenner is harsh and has a peculiar, botanical diveristy. The archipelago is of great importance for migrating small birds in the spring. A diversity of birds nest here in April-June. Bird life was preserved in 1935, and there are certain prohibitions on hunting and removing eggs.

About the lighthouse
Svenner lighthouse and its buildings were preserved in 1997 and made accessible to the public. The lighthouse is one of 37 selected cultural environments with regional and national conservation value in Vestfold.

The lighthouse is located on the island of Korpekollen in the archipelago of Svenner about two nautical miles from the coastline, and was first lit in 1874. The original tower, which was square and made of stone, was built by prisoners from Akershus fortress. The lighthouse keeper "Steinhuset" which was erected at the same time, is still there. Today's cast iron tower was built in 1900, along with new housing and outbuildings. The tower is 18.7 meters high and the top extends over 40 meters above sea level.

The history of Svenner is much older than the lighthouse. From the Middle Ages, Svenner has been an important port for local fishermen and other seafarers.. At the beginning of 1790 a fixed pilot was stationed at Svenner. Ulabrand, Anders Jacob Johansen from Ula in Vestfold, was one of the nautical pilots who had their base here. The lighthouse has not been staffed since late 2002 and was automated in 2003.

Svenner marina
Svenner is a popular port, especially among the locals. Even though the harbor at Svenner is gentle, you should not travel in and out of the port when there is a lot of wind. You can enter Svenner at both the Nordbogen, Røvika and in Fyrhavna. There are great mooring opportunities along the mountain or along the pier, and good anchorage in the sandy bottom.

Transportation
Boat transport in the summer season, or contact Stavern Dykkersenter tel. +47 92842833 / Taxiboat Vestfold for transportation and taxi boat.

Tjøme

From Tønsberg and Nøtterøy we cross Vrengen bridge over to Tjøme, the islands furthest out in the Oslo Fjord towards the fresh seas of the Skagerrak. The three main islands, Tjøme, Brøtsø and Hvasser together with lots of small islands with sheltered harbours is a well-known holiday paradise where one can experience good swimming possibilities during the summer's long and sunny days. Tjøme claims to have most sunny days in the year!

Tjøme's area is 38 km². 4.500 people live here permanently. During the summer there are between 20.000-30.000 residents on this popular holiday island, due to the summer cottages here. There are restaurants, hotels, cottages to rent, camping grounds and a school camp.

As "Places of Interest" we must mention Tjøme's nature and Færder National Park.

"The World's End" Verdens Ende lies furthest south on Tjøme. The area has fantastic views towards the Skagerrak. Superb bathing possibilities from smooth rocks and islands. The name "World's End" originated amongst travellers here in the beginning of the 20th century. Before that the area was best known as vantage point for pilots looking for ships. The well known "basket lighthouse" and the restaurant were built in 1932. The long pier from the mainland out towards the small islands forms a protected harbour basin. Here lies one of Tjøme's largest Marinas with service buildings.

Hvasser – with the village of Sandøsund also has a unique contact with the skerries and the sea. South of Hvasser there are good rambling and bathing possibilities. On the northern part of the island is the well-known bathing beach; Lilleskagen.

Tjøme all the year round…
Tjøme is also an attraction for those who seek the first sign of spring or the beautiful colours of autumn. The foaming spray from a raging sea over the rocks at "World's End" or the clear, calm days of winter can be a worthwhile experience.

Jotunhallen
